Speedometer gear adapter removal? C3

I need to remove the speedometer gear adapter on my 72 with Muncie and the working space is too tight for my hands. I am thinking of supporting the transmission with a padded floor jack and then remove the tail shaft mount and the brace that attaches to the mufflers. Does this sound reasonable or is there an easier way to do this? Searching here and the archives I find lots of discussion about swapping gears but no one commenting on how they got the cable off.

What you suggest will work just fine and, in fact, is the only practical way to remove the speedometer fitting with the transmission mounted in the car.

It's done, as described but messy. I thought about asking my wife to put on my coverals and gloves. Nah!
