Data on 70 Big Block Dipsticks

I am searching for data on 70 big block dipsticks. They appear to have changed over the short six month model year, and I am trying to determine when the changes occurred. The early dipsticks appear to have had a black plug in the handle of the dipstick until late Feb or early Mar, which then changed to red. Many dipsticks have lost their plugs. The early gauges had lines: ADD | | FULL until late May or early June when they changed to circles instead of lines.

I would appreciate knowing what your dipstick looks like if you have a 70 big block. Please post here, email or PM the following data:
    Name
Last 5 Numbers of Serial Number
    Build Date
    A/C or Non A/C
    Color of Plug
    Gauge Have Lines or Circles

Please post your data here or send me an email of PM.

    Thanks,
    Allen

Did all districts originally have a plug?

      Hi Mark,

As far as I know all dipsticks originally had a plug. It seems like the black ones were bad at falling out. It could have something to do with the handles being crimped and not having a perfectly round hole for the plug.

I don't think that the 1969 big block dipstick, GM #3959158, had a plug. Instead, the pull loop was flattened right to the end. This dipstick may also have been used for early 1970.

I have a 70 BB (390 HP) #09304 (May 15 build date), no AC and no end plug, the dipstick looks just like yours - ADD | | FULL.

Any ideas on where to find (make) the black plug that inserts into the handle?

I've seen a lot of 70-72 dipsticks with no plug. It sounds like we're saying they all had a plug which fell out.

                Jim,

Thank you very much for supplying your data.

It is looking like your dipstick may have originally had a red plug based on the data I have so far. There is a low mileage car built May 6th which has a red plug. You might wait until we get more data before deciding on the plug to use. When we get more data, we will be posting what we have found.

                Thanks,
                Allen

                  Gary,

Are there any other markings on your gauge area other than ADD | | FULL ?

                  Thanks,

Re: Data on 70 Big Block Dipsticks

The original 1969-1971 Chevrolet, Camaro, Chevelle, Nova small block dipstick , GM # 3951576, were made by 2 different manufacturers.

One was stamped as follows: "ADD: :FULL USE GM 6041-M-QUALITY MS OIL. M" with a handle with a green plug.

The other was stamped as follows: "ADD l l FULL USE GM 6041-M-QUALITY MS OIL. E" with a handle with a "flat" tip.

The 1972-1973 3951576 dipsticks were stamped "USE SE ENGINE OIL".

I always assumed that the big block dipsticks had similar stampings.......but maybe not.
