    1965 s-tube finish

    Hey Guys,
Recently had my 65 fuel car judged. Was told my s-tube was to shiny. Judging manual just says it has less shine that the air cleaner. but no more info. Is it suppose to be flat or semi gloss.? I understand that the S-tube and the air cleaner hosing were painted at two different locations explaining the difference in finish. Appreciate you help.

Your car was probably judged by someone who knows nothing about paint and the way it was originally applied. I can take the same paint and make many different finish appearances based on application method. Just ask John Ballard as he and I spent our working careers in the paint industry.

            Bruce,
Mine has a semi gloss finish. Definitely less shine than the Air Cleaner body. When it was judged at two different Nationals it got positive comments.
Original cars that I have seen seem to be the same.

Long ago Michael Hanson made a post on this subject. He posted a photo that I have buried around here showing the radiator core support coming down the assembly line with the S tube with it. Both were painted the same shade of black.
Just like Dave Strickland's nice photo.
Mike if you are looking in please email me that photo. Thanks, JD

John, the attached quote is something Michael Hanson posted on the subject. What’s notable is that earlier he explained that parts dipped “semi-gloss” black (like the s-tube) would be much more shiny than those sprayed semi-gloss. Sounds like the the air cleaner main body (“can”) was always full gloss, and the s-tube could vary between very shiny and a bit duller, depending on the dip process.
