1954 Corvette Oil Filter

Was an oil filter available as a dealer installed option in 1954?
If not, are there aftermarket options available now? If so, who sells them?

no oil filters were available for the corvette 235 ci engines. I recently purchased a bolt on oil filter that fastens to the drivers side of the engine block, designed for 6 cyl pass cars. I had hoped I could install it on pour old 54 corvette but the presence of the dual exhaust header pipes prevents its usage on a 53 or 54 6 cylinder corvette. its unfortunate as is a really neat aluminum casting .
I suppose you could install a remote oil filter like the dealer installed ones for the 53-55 chevy pass car 235's. they bolted on the intake manifold with u-bolts . doubt that would work as the 54 vet tri-carbs would interfere.
if u are hell bent on having an oil filter, I suppose you could mount one remotely on the pass side of the engine and run high pressure e rubber oil lines to the drivers side of the block. I'd suggest u just change the oil in the 235 every 1000 miles or so. mike mccagh

Mike, thanks for sharing your experience. I was afraid of that.
The driver side of the engine is pretty busy, without much room to add a filter.
I will stay with your suggestion and change the oil more frequently.

Yes - I have seen several cars with added on remote oil filters.
I have one in the shop now.
You can plumb into the drivers side oil pressure port / line with rubber lines and bolt it to the passenger inner fender as above
Very common.
Yes it can be done using the 50's passenger car oil filter set up
But originally - no - they did not come with oil filters.
If you want to get really fancy - you get the one that uses toilet paper rolls (I am not making this up)

chris is not making up the toilet paper oil filter element. there was a 235 so equipped back in the 60's here in cumberland. we never accused the owner of being full of sh////it. and the filter preferred CHARMIN. MIKE
