    C2 Steering wheel

    Hello all,
Does anyone know of a company that repairs steering wheels?

    Thanks.

    Re: C2 Steering wheel

    John,

If you’re referring to the plastic, simulated woodgrain steering wheel, and not the teak wheels, then I think the answer is no. I looked into the restoration question about 6 months ago, hoping I could find someone who could perform an undetectable repair of a 1/16” crack in the original simulated wood wheel from my ‘66 and I could find no one who performs such repairs.

There are repro simulated woodgrain steering wheels for 64-66 being sold for around $400. And there are a fair number of used, original wheels available if you look, but many have cracks and/or scratches. Every once in a while someone will have an NOS simulated woodgrain wheel for sale on eBay, but for the typical price that I’ve seen, I’d probably consider a restored original teak wheel instead. (There are two NOS simulated woodgrain wheels on eBay at the moment for $2500 and $3000.)

          Koch's
Yes, twice. Both times were for 62 VW wheels. Koch can provide a new cast wheel from samples they have made in the past, or repair existing wheels and refinish to whatever original color you want.

They actually had the casting for a 62 VW wheel which was a two year only deal. Came out perfect and they were able to match the original VW paint code. The re-cast and finish was $650.

The 2nd wheel was a NOS from Germany which was the wrong color for my BUG and it also has a paint chip. They were able to repair the chip and finish it to the correct color. That was a $250 job but the wheel was in perfect condition except for the chip so not too much prep work required.

The turn-around time is very good (4-6weeks) and they actually pick up the phone when you call!

The other company was equally capable but I don't think they could cast from scratch.

When you go to either website they have a lot of very cool and unique items

Does anybody know why the plastic, simulated woodgrain steering wheel develop a small open crack on them? Is
it do to the various temperatures in the Northern States? Or is it consistent wherever you live? My is fine for now
but will it be in the future? Thanks>Larry
