    best epoxy

    Hey Guys,
I have been doing some research on epoxy. Seems that JB weld is most used? Recently heard about Duracraft,
all craft professional ET40 epoxy. Has anyone had any experience with this product? Would appreciate your help.

    Bruce,
I've used JB Weld for lots of purposes and haven't had an issue with it. I haven't heard of the Duracraft product. What are you needing to do?

Jim, still contemplating a fix for the stripped bolt hole on a head for a valve cover. Tried filling drilling and tapping using JB weld but it didn't hold. I heard this product to be even stronger. supposed to be great for steel?

For the thread repair, loctite makes a product specifically for that, cleanliness is key to success. I'd also try to get a few threads deeper in the hole with a bottoming tap so then you are holding on some threads in steel and some in the loctite product (2 part epoxy).

Daniel, will check that out but this has already been drilled to get out broken bolt. I am not comfortable with drilling deeper. Don't have the experience. Thanks for your input.

Isn't there enough metal around the hole that you could install a Heli-coil? That's what I would try.

I agree. A heli-coil is the most permanent way to repair this.

I've had good luck with time-sert (or big-sert) inserts in cases where there wasn't enough material for a heli-coil. I have actually have used time-serts in this very application with success. They can be pricey, especially in larger sizes, but in this smaller size they are cheap enough IMHO.

Bruce, I also have used JB Weld with good success. A couple of things, you need to use the standard JB Weld and not the quick setting. You also need to wait a minimum of 24 hours for it to cure.

Instead of JB Weld on a bolt, try using a stud. JB Weld an ALLEN HEAD stud of appropriate length into that head. Use a nut/washer on that stud to secure your valve cover. Allen head stud will allow you to minimize stud twist in the head - tension only no twist. See image below.

No Bruce, I do not. As I indicated, I have never had an issue filling a damaged hole with JB Weld and redrilling and threading it after it was cured.
