I just took the rear tail housing off my super original 1969 Camaro and those nuts were what was holding the inner taillight housing to the body.

      Michael,

Just curious. What were those nuts screwed onto? A pot metal stud that was not threaded originally? Or some sort of steel screw or bolt?

            Gary,

The Pal nuts you show in your original post are the same nuts that were on my late production '65 coupe and I plan to put them back on. I used Evaporust, Simple Green and a brass brush to clean them up. The picture is from my database of Corvette restoration photos.

I took Mike M's advice and used a die nut to make some treads on my new Trim Parts tail light assemblies studs to aid in threading the Pal nuts onto the new studs. Worked like a charm!

The Pal nuts are definitely the most common finding. I know of a grand total of three ‘66s, including mine, that used the uncommon Keps nuts.

For whatever reason my original Keps nuts don’t clean up nicely with Simple Green, followed by EvapoRust. I soaked them in EvapoRust for 24 hours on two occasions, and the rust stains just don’t go away even after scrubbing with a brass bristle brush. I’m going to use steel wool or fine sand paper and then paint them to simulate gray phosphate, which I think it what they were originally. I may never use them if the risk of shearing off a lamp housing stud feels imminent, which is what another person described to me.

                  James,

Exactly what die nut did you use?
