    stuck choke

    Hey guys,
Choke on my 62 340 hp sticks open? I have tried adjusting the choke to close but continues to stick. This carburetor was rebuilt a year ago? I have also tried spraying cleaner in all the moving parts but no difference? must be doing something wrong?
    your help is appreciated.

    Re: stuck choke

Assuming its an AFB, its worth determining if the choke piston is stuck in its bore, often exhuast gases get up in there and carbonize the passage; particularly if the hot air tube is broken at the exhaust manifold.....easy fix. Pop the choke cover off, disconnect the coil spring and work the piston up and down. If it sticks then some pentrating oil will sometimes free it up, but I've seen them so bad that I took the bottom Welch plug off and some Hoppes #9 gun solvent and a brass bore brush and scrubbed the cylinder like a rifle barrel.

Frank, I took t apart and found that the anchor that holds the spring in place was broken. so the spring wasn't able to close the choke plate. Easy fix just order a new spring plate. thanks for your help

That would do it, if you can't find that part I might have one on my "Island of Lost Toys"...

            Re: stuck choke

If you remove the choke housing to clean out the vacuum break piston bore, remember that there is a tiny O-ring between the choke housing and the carb body that seals the vacuum passage. One should be included in zip kits.

Indeed, I've taken more than one carb apart where some prior person forgot the "O" ring.

                Re: stuck choke

Someone mentioned issues with the heat tube going thru the exhaust manifold.
Not to rob your post Bruce but one of the biggest problems I have restoring midyear fuel injections is the majority of the owners do not have a new heat tube installed in the drivers side exhaus manifold.
So then the choke housing fills up with black soot and the choke comes to a halt.
The piston in the bore is both good and not so good. I put a choke piston in all midyear units but that may be a mistake on my part if the car owner doesn't replace the heat tube.
What size is the tiny o'ring? Readily available without waiting for a rebuild kit. John

Brude the only junkrer AFB I have with the choke housing still on it, was converted to an electric choke - so its Bubba'ed up.
So I can't help you with this particular part (sorry).

Call Chuck Smith tomorrow - he'll prob fix you up, you have to cal him as he has a ton of used parts not advertised on the web site:
