    c2 63 327 / 300 hp starter clicking and crank not turning

    Hi All,

I know that the title may sound very similar to many threads here however, I have not been able to find a reason for my clicking and so I have questions:

    - Symptom
    - turn key and starter clicks ( more than once) until I turn off the key.
    - Cause
    - Really not sure:
    - My thoughts have been, is the motor seized? I have turned the motor over from using longer crank pulley bolts and a bar. The motor turns over from there. Is the battery bad? I checked the battery with a multi-meter and it is greater than 12v. Is it the starter switch? When the key is turned to on the stater actuates with clicking sound. Isit th starter? I replaced old starter with new yesterday. Starter works by way of testing with jumper cables on the bench and so I do not think it is starter or solenoid. When motor is connected to all pulleys and starter, the start just clicks when trying to start.

    - If I can turn the motor from the crank, it is not seized right?
    - The issues seems to be at the starter gear to fly wheel connection and I am stuck from there..

    thanks all

    Best,
    Brad

If you can turn the engine over by hand then you can be assured it is not seized. If you have replaced the starter/solenoid and get the same problem as with the old starter/solenoid, then it's a pretty safe bet that the problem is not of the starter/solenoid. There might be a problem at the ignition switch or the purple wire from the switch to the "S" terminal on the solenoid.

Otherwise, it could also be a battery problem. Just because you can get "12+" volts does not necessarily mean the battery is OK. You should have about 13.5 volts with a fully charged battery. However, the battery needs to be LOAD CHECKED to see if it can deliver under starting conditions.

Sounds like a faulty battery... have you tried jumper cables to a good battery (running car)????

/\ /\ /\ This. If you can jump the car off with jumper cables to a known good battery or a running car, you can be 99.9% sure your current battery is not producing enough power, under load, to start your car.

Brad a while back I had a problem with my battery shut-off. If you have one try to run cable direct to battery.

Ed: Just curious was it the "Blade" Or "Turn Screw" type of shut-off? Thanks>Larry

I've had 3 of those green/black knob shot-offs fail, only knife blade for me now.
Putting a voltmeter across the battery while cranking can be an indicator.
If the voltage drops much below 9V; the battery is the most likely culprit.

Larry, My shut off was the screw type.

                    Joe,

Thank you for the detailed feedback. I really liked your comment on "Just because you can get "12+" volts" as this was spot on. I was a bit reluctant to go the battery route as I replaced recently ( about 2 years ago with minimal driving and battery cables disconnected while sitting) but now can use your lessons's learned going forward!

resolution was battery and all other hardware in the loop is good.

                    Best,
                    Brad

Thanks Stephen - you got it right. The battery was the issue. Thanks for sorting out my message and being able to point to battery

Spot on. Turned out bad battery. Thanks for getting me back on the road.

                            Hi Ed,

Thanks for the trouble shooting here. I do not use a shut-off. Good thought as it could have helped me and got someone else on the discussion board ( Larry in this case) to think about shut-off options.

                            Best,
                            Brad

I happen to pull the battery before your post. I will keep this pro tip in mind for future troubleshooting.
