    62 FI Question

Hi- Is the wire "clamp" on the balance tube at the L/H forward plenum bolt typical factory?
    Thanks -E.J.IMG_20210904_172255869.jpg

EJ, I would have to see more of the clamp to see if it's typical Rochester Products.. Your lock washer is hiding the unique vent tube clip. Part @ 7014899. Under the washer area an original had a unique bent and configuration.

John-Thanks for the reply- Clamp was on this car when I bought it from the second owner in july 1997; who bought it in mar. 1964 after the original owner traded it in for a 64 365 hp coupe. The original owner was a college student at 0kla. St. Univ; and used the car to commute home to Yukon,Okla. on weekends. He ordered the car, and told me that the only issues he had with the car in the time he owned it were radio quit, radiator leak, and one broken FI drive cable.
Second owner was a mechanic in the Air Force, who used the car as a daily driver for years, maintaining and servicing the car regularly. (Valve job and hone block and re-ring at 95 K mi.)IMG_20210907_185642774.jpgIMG_20210907_185619204.jpg

              Re: 62 FI Question

There is no doubt a wire clip was installed to support the balance tube. That looks like a factory original piece.

John- Thanks for the info.- I am also curious about the fastening hardware for this little clamp.
This one had: clamp- flat washer -nut
Kind of an unusual situation-Did you mention lock washer?
Would not want to "mangle" the clamp when tightening the nut?
                    Thanks-E.J.

                      Re: 62 FI Question

Using washers is not a great idea, I miscounted upon FI removal once, one slid down into a cylinder, had fun pulling the head to retrieve it. GM did not use any nor are they needed, very low tightening torque is required.

Dan-Thanks for your input- I was just wondering what is typical in this situation. I think I have seen this clamp on a friend's very early 63 back in the day.
Your 64 sounds amazing! In the late 70's, I had a red/red leather 65 FI coupe (drum brakes). What a wonderful car- Drove it Bloomington and back from central Ks. a couple times.

                          Re: 62 FI Question

EJ, I highly recommend using "AN" washers on almost ALL aluminum F.I. applications - plenum to adaptor plate, adaptor plate to heads, etc. That type of washer is barely visible under the nut or bolt and helps prevent the aluminum from galling when tightened. They were not designed to be installed multiple times. If I am judging the car I will note the application of washers but NOT take any points. Good luck, Don H.

                              Re: 62 FI Question

No washer of any kind was used under the 8 nuts to hold the FI onto the baseplate.
The original nuts have a flat surface to the bottom and top of them. Sort of like a build in washer.

Jerry Bramlett. I know you are looking in. Please post a pic of the original nuts. Thanks, JD
