With fuel pump installed properly, the first try today it ran longer, but still died and ran rough. Pulled a valve cover, the fan and pulleys, set TDC on #1, found the tach (at least) one tooth off. Set the tach, put everything back, and viola! It runs.
Dewll was in the 20s, set to 30. Will tackle timing another day. Idle is smooth, about 1100, so some adjusting to do but it ran great during the 20-minute cam break-in. Drove it around the cul de sac with no trouble, so I guess I didn't screw up the Muncie rebuild 10 years ago.
It did belch water when I shut it down from the cam break-in. Not sure why. I filled the engine through the thermostat housing and then put in the thermostat and buttoned it up. Never saw the water level in the overflow tank drop during operation. Temp gauge was no help- it was dead so need to sort that out.
A good day.
