    C-6 shifter stuck in Park

I just went to move my C-6 and the shifter is stuck in Park again. The release button won't release the shifter so you can select the gear. I had this iissue earlier this year and took it to the dealer and the said the pins need to re alined. Got the car back in early June after the first incident and it was fine until today when I tried to move it into the garage. I yanked hard on the shifter to get it out of Park and was able to put it in the garage. I disconnected the battery because the lights and the radio were still on. I had the cable checked to see if something had broken and it was fine. There is only 37000 miles on the 2006. Any ideas befroe I go back to the dealer. He indicated last time that I may need a new shifter (expensive) and I'm not convienced that's the problem. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Pat,

Do a search on the forum. IIRC Mark Lincoln and many others, the list is long, have had this same problem and there's a remedy for it.

You do NOT need a new shifter. Check CF. Hundreds of posts there on that common problem. Heat seems to be a greater cause of the plastic piece failing than miles.

Either the Brake pedal switch, or interlock relay(Pass side behind carpeting at feet area), or solenoid(inside shifter), or shifter microswitches, or RCDL module could be the fault.

Either way, the lock pawl lever in the shifter prevents gear change if any of the above fails. Mostly the solenoid, and its not a replaceable part. It's integrated(riveted) inside the shifter.

Most times intermittent. I've solved by lubricating the solenoid, but not always a lasting fix.

I added the "emergency" pull cable as you'll see in the document.

If the shifter shifts but not the transmission, the problem is the plastic bushing(s) at one end of the cable, or both.

Check You Tube for the procedure. I decided to snip off the lock pawl. Problem solved.

              That's what I did on my 06.

Lifted up the console and cut off the "hook" with a Dremel tool. Been working fine for 5 or more years.

Of course, the car won't "lock" into park when you turn the engine off, but...................

Thanks guys for your input and help. Got the car to start and shift. Just deciding whether to cut the paw off as Mark did or take Rich's route and just tie it back or have an emergency release cord. I'm leaning towards the tie it back and not cut anything.

Just spent $700+ (Canadian) for a new shifter from GM to solve this and guess what...? New shifter was defective and didn't lock out as it's supposed to do. Told the dealer to leave it in while they order a replacement (warranty). No issues without the lock out function...

My dealer told me the same thing that it was expensive. SInce I check out the above threads and the Corvette forum. The new shifter (same part #) is no better than the one installed in the car. I carefully examined the area where the solenoid is located and there is a ton of heat generated from the engine in the tunnel. Heat kills electronic components. After freeing up mine, I tried it without the fix and it did work, but I'm not taking that chance again. I drilled a 1/16" hole and tied off the park paw with mechanics wire. As Mark Lincoln said, Problem solved.

Re: C-6 shifter stuck in Park

I currently have mine C6 apart. Lots of plastic part that one has to be very careful with. Getting the electrics unplugged was the biggest issue. I got all by one the rear lighter. After spending a half hour on the rear lighter plug I finally cut the wires for it. It's not even the same plug connector as the forward lighter plug which I didn't have much issue with. Even with the console on the bench I still haven't had any luck getting it unplugged. You can imagine what it's like with a mirror. Maybe my dentist would have been able to get it! I have a replacement micro switch which I was going to try. All the switches are in series and provide a ground to the solenoid. Any one of them have high resistance and the solenoid will not operate. I don't believe the solenoids go bad very often. I am down to the shifter assembly and getting it out without breaking the small tab that operated the selector tab is where I gave up till I recovered some of my patience.

The Center Console is discontinued. So is the plastic part that retained the ride selector switch. Seems every Automatic C6 has had this issue or will have. GM fell on their face on this one.

The rear lighter was a problem as well. The first time I took it to the dealer and it doesn't appear they were able to get the rear lighter socket un pluged. The main lighter was never pluged back in either. I was able to move the center console enough with out cutting those wires. It was tempting. Finally its all back together and working fine. The only other option for the center console is an aftermarket piece. If I was going to replace mine I would look a a carbon fiber knockoff.
