    1965 Cigarette Lighter Help

I can't get the cigarette light to stay in during the heating cycle. I've included some picture of my original lighter housing and new Casco 63 lighter element. Do the tangs in the back hold onto the outer portion of the lighter element or does it hold onto the inner portion of the lighter element during the heating cycle. If you hold it in it will glow red hot in a matter of seconds. This is the last item on my operations check list to get working correctly.

    Thanks,

    James

Usually the tangs in the housing need to be adjusted or they can be broken. First disconnect the battery then examine the 3 tangs in the housing. If they are in good condition you can take a pick like tool and gently bend them inward. Be careful not to break the tang just a little adjustment at a time. If one of the tangs is broken you will have to replace the housing. There is no fuse on the cigarette lighter so power is always on make sure you disconnect the battery before any repairs are attempted.

        Alan,

I ordered an inline fuse kit from 'Lectric Limited yesterday when I was ordering a replacement glove box light switch.

I could not get the original lighter receptacle to work properly, even after I took it out of the dash to try and fine tune it. I had ordered a replacement lighter receptacle from LIC last spring when I noticed the lighter would not stay in during heating. So after repeated attempts to get the original to work properly, I went ahead and installed the reproduction 2 prong lighter receptacle. I installed it and it worked the first time. I'd rather take the small hit for non-originality than the 25 point hit in Operations Check for non-functioning.

Thanks to all who responded to my question.

        James

Not to wander off topic but many (all ?) of the repro glove box light switches have a defect and won't last long..

The problem will go away if you stop smoking! After all 25 points loss is better than dying of lung cancer!

              RJ,

Interesting how times change with regard to smoking. Would most of our members have believed your statement if you had said that when the NCRS was founded in 1974?

                Frank,

How do those repro glove box lights fail?
