I posted about my radiator issues a number of years ago https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...m-Radiator-Tag
Ran the car with a copper radiator but finally ordered a DeWitts replacement tank top. Plan is to use the original mounting brackets so I got the old radiator and brackets down off the top shelf of the pallet racking.
I'm more convinced than I was in the original thread that the radiator that was in the car when I bought it (for the first time) in 1968 was a GM replacement. The pictures below will show why I believe this. I was as careful as I could be in removing the brackets to use on the new radiator. But in several cases the heads popped off the rivets holding the 'U' brackets to the channel - for lack of a better definition. After all these years these things were really stuck to the radiator core. There is one of the 'U' brackets that does not have the aluminum rivets like the other 3, but rather is pop riveted on. I'm guessing that when the warranty replacement radiator was installed whoever was doing it did the same thing I did and popped a couple rivet heads and saw this as a solution. You will also see that the separated rivet heads appear to be oxidized/corroded - I'm thinking some of them had failed before I ever started trying to disassemble the work of 60 years ago.
First picture shows the side towards the radiator of the 'U' bracket that was pop riveted many years ago. Second is of the failed rivet heads - note how the one failed as a 'doughnut'. Next is side towards radiator of original rivets. Fourth picture is opposite side of original rivets - note the one with the missing head at lower right. Last picture is the outside of the pop riveted bracket.
In any event here is the question - has anyone had to re-rivet one of these before? With the rubber padding I can imagine that the pop rivet would most likely work fine - but again, does anyone have any experience on this? Thanks in advance.
