    C1 Aluminum Frame Shim Corrosion

When I dis-assembled my front end from the frame the aluminum shims were badly corroded. I'm about to re-assemble the front end with new shims (thin edge forward) and wonder if an anti-seize grease / dielectric grease would prevent the shims from crumbling away over time.

Or maybe paint or clear coat?

      How about stainless shims?

I believe you could be over thinking this.

        Consider:
        1. The original shims have lasted for a minimum of 60 years with no protective coating or limits on weather/road conditions at all.
        2. You probably aren't going to be subjecting your car to the same road/weather conditions which contributed to the corrosion you've found.
        3. And even if you do, the replacement shims will probably last another 60 years. Will you be around then to care?

Ouch.... good points all! This is an assembly which I'll never do again. While here though I just want to provide an ounce of prevention (if any is required). Any job...do it once ....do it well.

          Thanks for the input.

If you are going to be replacing the shims, first check the alignment and determine whether you are able to obtain the nominal settings on both sides (+2 caster, +0.5 camber). These are the measurements that are attained, not within the +- tolerance band. If you cannot, consider adding a second shim plate if you need more caster. It will be a very different driving experience at nominal, and that includes bias ply tires.

tidbit of shim info - Zora had the shims added to improve handling after his 1956 high speed tests - 1956 R1 shims were brass
