    '66 Air Conditioning Questions

After reconditioning or renewing all major components in the Air Conditioning system on my '66 BB, I am about ready to test for leaks and charge the system. Couple of questions:

    - I have read that I can use nitrogen to pressurize the system and check for leaks (listen for hissing, soap bubbles on fittings). Does someone have experience with this process and can you find small leaks?
    - I always planned on using R12 to charge the system but could I use the more available, and cheaper (and probably more responsible) 134A and retain the original Schrader valves? I may have to make up a hose adapter to charge, but is there any reason why this would not work? I understand there is a difference in refrigerant oil and a reduction in cooling capability, but the system is clean now and I could go either way.

Thanks - any other hints or comments would be appreciated. Joe

    Joe,
There is also a bit of freestanding nitrogen in your compressor from the overnight test it got. Hate to say this, but I used to test the system with propane. Propane was also added to the gas and they called it a hot shot because it cools so well. I made a test gage that bolts to the manifold when it is disconected from the comp to test the system behind the comp.
Can't find nitrogen in small bottles.
    Good luck.

      Joe,

You will need to vacuum the system down before adding the coolant so if it holds a vacuum on the gauge you should be ok to fill it to the systems required capacity.

I just switched my r134a system back to r12 and it cools SO MUCH BETTER! Find someone local through your Chapter contacts who will do an r12 evac/charge for you. I can't even describe how nice it was this morning driving to work at 5AM (72', 95+% humidity), without AC I could barely see out the windows

          Joe:

There is too much to discuss/review by trying to type it in here. If you want, I can help you get everything ready for refrigerant as well as answer your questions. I have helped many many folks here and on the other forum (CF) with their AC systems. So far everyone has been happy with the results.

I am not asking for business or extra work, but if you want my help I will provide it. Dom knows me very well........sounds like he may of rebuilt your compressor. If he did, you can be assured of an outstanding job.

My phone is 985-785-6142. If I am not at home, leave a call back number and a good time to talk.
