69 Headlamp Actuator - Internal Rust

I've removed the LH headlamp actuator, springs and clevis for a little "dress up." May be a mistake, but I decided to replace the actuator dust boot, seal and ring while I have it off. The dust boot was split in one place, but the headlamps were operating fine.

Once off, I could hear some "rattling" in the back side of the actuator. With a little shaking, about a quarter-size amount of rust dust came out of the hose tube. The rod moves freely with vacuum and pressure at the proper connections, so there doesn't appear to be any damage associated with the diaphragm. After removing the seal, I can see a rusty appearance. No rust fell out like it did on the other side.

Is there anything I can do to clean the interior of the actuator, or at least try to retard further corrosion and ultimate failure. I've had great success with Evapo-Rust on large and small parts, but never anything internal. Sometimes that treatment does leave a very thin black film (that I usually wipe or brush off), but that film would probable be less harmful that the rust.

Regardless of any cleanup attempt, are there any internal preventative measures I might try? Lubricate?

BTW - at this point I'm not concerned about any damage to the exterior finish. I've removed it. I've had good look with the Caswell yellow chromate solution, but nothing this big - yet.

    Thanks
    Mike

You can spray some WD40 inside the actuator. Swirl it around and then wipe it out with a paper towel or rag. That will help coat the rust and prevent it from getting worse. The WD 40 will not harm the rubber diaphragm inside the actuator.

I do remember. Glad the actuator still looks good. Yes you can shoot some WD40 in the side with the curved tube. Swirl it around good so it coats the inside. You can turn it over and let the excess drain out of the curved tube. t helps keep rust from forming inside.
