    C2 Key code questions

I am looking for information on my key set for my 63 vett build date second week Dec 62. I replaced the key set in this car several years back. Recently having trouble with the ignition switch. I am removing this assembly. On the original ignition tumbler assembly which I kept, I noticed a number stamped into the unit R107. What is the significance of this number?
Second I am trying to understand how to decode the numbers stamped into the keys. It is unfortunate that I mixed a number of keys together er the years and I am not sure what came with the car. I believe in the original build ignition, door, glove box and spare tire lock key were the same numbers. Any information in how to decode these numbers appreciated.

    Thanks

    Re: C2

63's used one key for everything. The key code is a four digit number. The could could be on any one of the locks. Look at the glove box then the door locks.

Could that number on the ignition tumbler be 8107 ?

The 4 digit key code corresponds to a five digit number which is the depth of cut in the key for each tumbler so 8107 corresponds to 53443 from the base of the key to the tip. Five is the deepest cut etc..

          John,

Not quite correct. There are six cuts along any given C2 key. For code 8107 the six cuts are 534443. For C2s, the door and ignition lock cylinders have six tumblers that use all six cuts on the key. The spare tire lock only has five tumblers and uses the five cuts closest to the tip of the key. The glove box lock has only four tumblers.

yes !!..sorry. In any event I have a key cutter and code book and some keys I got at a swap meet years ago and would be happy to put a key in the mail no charge.

Taking a closer look at the key assembly it is indeed an 8.
              Thanks for that feedback.

Gary and John thank you for that added information. Is there any way of determining what the key number should be for my car. Any relationship to when the car was produced?
                Thank you

                  Rich,

For C2s, the original ignition core, the doors locks, and the glove box lock push button should all have the key code stamped into it. Must be original items, though. There is no relationship between car production date and the key code.

                    Re: C2

Gary. I guess the only way for me to find out what the correct key code is to look through my old stock and find one of my old door locks as you and Harry mentioned. Thank you all for the inputs I had no idea of the coding procedure. Afterward I will try to locate someone to rework my locks or build new.

                        Gary
No the glove box and tire lock were not re-coded when last the ignition switch was installed. But I do know that at present they do not match (different keys). In addition the door locks were changed some years back so the trail to original numbers might be lost. I did keep the old parts and I am in the process of going through old boxes to locate these items. I guess in the worse case I may need to remove each lock and have them re-coded or new.
Many thanks for the education on the keys assemblies to bad I did not pay attention to them earlier in the cars life.

                        Again thank you
