    AIM revision date vs. implementation

I have a very late 1956 and I am curious how fast changes were made once the AIM was revised. Case in point is the washer reservoir. The AIM was changed to reflect a hard plastic box from a vinyl bag on 9/5/56. I believe my car was assembled around 9/20/56, a full two weeks after the AIM was revised. Should a 56 car assembled on 9/20 have a vinyl bag or a plastic box? Or, can the AIM not be used to determine part "correctness" during the 56 to 57 transition?

This is going to become an issue for me as my car is missing a lot of parts. Many will have different versions for the 57 model year. How can I determine which version to purchase? I understand the transition on paper is overnight with the last 56 probably being assembled on 9/20 and the first 57 probably being assembled either on 9/21 (Friday) or 9//24 (Monday). Reality is likely much more vague due to leftover parts in the bins, and shortages causing early implementation of 57 parts.

Thanks for any insights that can be provided!

There is no easy answer. Sometimes the AIM reflected a change already made; sometimes the AIM foreshadowed a change that was done immediately, while at other times the line exhausted existing supplies of parts before the change was made. So, to give you a definitive answer is impossible. 56-57 guys have been studying these cars for almost 50 years within the NCRS, and some study pre-NCRS, so there is a large body of knowledge out there. Your task will not be easy--you will have to ask and study regarding each individual part that is missing and could have been the recipient of an on the line change during the 56 model year.

      Scott,

Welcome to NCRS! What is your '56 VIN?

The last week "original" '56's we've seen, all had '56 parts on them.

The last week '57's "cleaned out the bins" and some had '56 parts on them as well as '58 parts.

        Scott,

Link below is to a John Hinckley article on Understanding Assembly Manual and Running Changes.

I think it will answer some of your questions.

Gary, I have 4467. The last 56 as far as I can tell. Unfortunately, it was very incomplete, so I will be a user of the great information here, not a provider of it.

This is a GREAT snippet of information! Perhaps my rebuilding job will not be as hard as I was thinking - at least in terms of 56/57 versions of parts. Thanks!

Thanks to David and Gary for providing information on how GM used the AIM. It was very enlightening. And certainly thanks to John Hinkley for putting it together and sharing it!
