69 Fron bumper extensions chroming question

These front bumperettes get rusty on the back behind the lower threads causing rust stains to run down the air dam. I had them re-chromed and while the area is much improved it still has signs of very light rust. While not expecting shiny chrome there I was expecting it to be rust-free. If not it will be no time before I have the same issue - unless I coat it with something myself. What are other's experiences here? Am I expecting too much from the plater or should the entire backside of the piece be clean and completely rust-free?

    Thanks,

    Jack

You're not expecting too much. Rust and scale should be removed during the prep process. If you're happy with the front finish, instead of having it replated, scuff the backside and apply silver POR15 or similar product. It's not TFP but that surface is hard to see when assembled.

In any case, I usually spray the back side of bumpers after plating with silver paint to help prevent rust.

Thanks Mark. I probably will just coat the back since the chrome came out nice.
