    63 starter solenoid

Looking for a rebuild kit for my 63 (340 HP) starter solenoid. No luck looking local. Anyone have any information for a possible source?

Standard Motor Products #SS408K. Any good auto parts store should be able to order it. Or:

        Hi Joe
Thank you. I went to the web site and typed in required info and it came back as part not compatible with my car/engine. Although the kit looks like the correct parts as shown in the picture. Any suggestions in what I may have missed.

        Thanks

The Standard Motor Products part number I provided should be correct for your application. Some of these online "compatibility checkers" are inaccurate.

Joe, you are correct. I went to the Standard Motor Products company which put me on to Rock Auto Parts which indicated the part number is the correct one.
Many thanks for your help that saved me a lot of time and running around.
              All the best.

Keep in mind that while the SMP kit is functionally correct, that does not mean that it's NCRS-correct. Of course, most of the components are unseen. The exception is the plastic cap. If your existing cap is original and is in good condition, I would re-use it with the rest of the components in the kit. Original caps have Delco-Remy logo and, possibly, other slight configuration differences compared to the cap supplied with the kit.

                  Joe.
Turns out that the SS408K from Standard Motor Products is back ordered with no source of the part at this time. I was able to pick up one kit from Napa that was on hand. What is not used any longer appears to be the contact washer is now aluminum. My guess is all the kits have gone this way if any can be located. By chance do you know of any supply houses that sell copper washers (my preference). I spent a good part of today looking at various possible sources near by with no success.

                  Thanks again

Various size copper and bronze washers are available from McMaster-Carr. They have many sizes available. I don't know if they have one that will meet the exact size requirement. I think I would use bronze over copper. Bronze is usually harder, should be more durable, and should be nearly conductive as copper.

I've rebuilt quite a few, but many kits come with metric hardware so keep that in mind. I have several NOS GM solenoids and those went metric at some point in time too.

Also, the stud nut should be oversize across-the-flats but I forget the actual dimensions.

Richard I have taken the solenoids apart and had luck cleaning the stud and paddle. You want a flat surface and some Emory cloth. Those 2 pieces tend to carbon up.

What does the solenoid #304 fit? I have heard of 910, 344, 356 but don't remember the 304.

I have some NOS solenoids and I THINK there part # ends in 458.
