Re: 1963 Original Rocker Moldimg
I think the reproduction rockers are a little shorter than the originals and the finish is usually a little dull on the reproduction and much brighter on originals. The ends are pretty crappy on both. I would think your originals would show a lot more sand blasting and scratches than the reproduction.- Top

Frank,
If you still had your copy of the ever popular 63 judging manual, it would show this picture with a description that reads 'original rocker moldings have a nearly smooth finished end absent of horizontal rib extrusion marks'. Hope this is enough info.Attached Files- Top

OK - I pulled this stuff down off the shelf - this first pair (with the unpainted horizontal depressions) were on the SWC when I bought it and I was told they were installed as NOS components.- Top

Re: 1963 Original Rocker Moldimg
This next set, just unwrapped with the black paint between the horizontal ribs are SUPPOSED to be original/NOS pieces. The finish is definitely brighter on this set - I don't think they've ever been installed.
What say you on the two sets ? My eyes aren't that great anymore and I don't want to mis-represent anything to future owners of the parts.- Top

Re: 1963 Original Rocker Moldimg
Frank, I'm leaning both sets are GM pieces not repros. Cathies Coupe had 64s on it when we got it in '07. I bought Zip repros and they even admitted before I bought them that the ends were very rough.
They were. I can't get photos, but the ends were very rough and splits at the bends.
Your first set seems to show traces of black paint in a few spots. I suspect a prior owner simply removed the paint for some reason. Maybe it was peeling or maybe they preferred all aluminum rather than repainting.
2nd set looks very nice. Were the wrappers GM?

Re: 1963 Original Rocker Moldimg
Thanks as always Rich - actually I removed the paint on the first set as I intended to send them off to Andy Cannizzo for restoration, they had gotten dull with a few light scratches - but then I found the NOS set. Can't say if the packaging on the second set is GM, but it is a very unusual bos that folds around the rockers tightly with interlocking tabs forming a triangular package- and the length is perfect with triangular foam packing on each end, the box seems made for the job, but I don't see a GM label anywhere on the packaging.
My car sold with repro moldings on it before I could swap on the second set above, IIRC I got the repros from Zip as well, and, yes, the ends were messy with actual splits in the metal where the ends were crimped or folded over.Attached FilesLast edited by Frank D.; July 13, 2021, 09:20 AM.- Top

Re: 1963 Original Rocker Moldimg
None of the NOS '63 rocker moldings are 100% correct. For one things-as mentioned the ends are not the same. The other thing is the length of them is inconsistent. It took two sets of NOS ones to find ones long enough for my '63. I compared them to an original I had after I got dinged at a regional.
The NOS ones should be called NOSR.- Top

See old thread below Help with 64 Rocker Moldings..Original or Reproduction
See Photo's towards end, it's for 64 but gives you an idea how they were made for production.
Have no idea how to turn the line and color off.
