C2 Proper Lubricant When R & R Distributor Tach. Cross Gear?

When we R&R the distributor tachometer cross gear what would be the proper lubricant applied to it? I assume
some of this lubricant will seep back onto the tach. cable. How much should be applied? My car is a 66 but thinking
this question would apply to all C2 years. Thanks in advance>Larry

      Larry:

When I did this job last, I used Delco-Remy #1960954 grease that is specific for this job. It can be found, but is not easy to get. Many folks use Lucas "Red-n-Tacky" synthetic chassis grease in this application. You want to use a good bit on the gears, but don't overdo it.

I just rebuilt a tach and I use the Red and Tacky.

I prefer GM 1960954 Distributor and Starter motor lubricant that I also use for the upper bushing grease well. It's long out of production, so since these are "permanently" lubricated you need a long life product that is very slow to evaporate. That means a full synthetic like Mobil 1 grease.

OP asked what to use for rebuilding his tach distributor. Collectively we gave him three or four choices/recommendations as well as sources for the "hard to find" stuff. He can now decide which path to take.

                1. DR 1960954
                2. Lucas Red-n-Tacky
                3. Mobil1 synthetic
                4. Valvoline synthetic
