71 Vette: Front Stabilizer Bar Frame Attachments

Can anyone shed any light on the '71s front stab bar mounting?
Specifically I'm looking for info on the bracket, screw assembly and nut that retain the stab bar to the frame (not the lower control arm).

    Referencing both the '71 & '72 AIMs, items #6, 7 & 8), I would like to know the following:
    - Bracket GM#391363 (Item #6): What is the finish of this bracket (black semi gloss?)
    - Screw Asm GM#3858700 (Item #7): Looking for all info (hex? w/washer type? thread? length? head marking? etc).
    - Nut GM#9417954 (Item #8): Confirm that this nut was not welded to the frame (as shown in '71 AIM) versus welded to frame (as shown in '72 AIM)

I tried finding the info in the '70 - '72 Judging & Technical Information Guide, 6th Edition (page 266), but, maybe I missed it.

    Going from memory here...

Bracket is dip painted semigloss black. Thinned Rustoleum works great.
Bolts are recessed head with integral washer, black phosphate.
Nut is welded to the frame.

      Pat,
      thanks for the info . . .
Any idea what the description of screw/bot assembly is (hex? w/washer type? thread? length? head marking? etc)?

        See my second line.
You might see more in my photos, or there is a picture in the manual, just not listed in the caption.
I'm at work so I can't get more details at the moment.

          Ray,

Bolt/screw asm 3858700 is described in a prior posting:

          https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...338#post639338

A good way to find info on bolts, nuts, washers, etc, is to search the archives with the GM part number.

Page #226, Figure Ch 7.10 shows the linkbolt, washers and bushing. Fig. Ch 7.9 shows the bracketbolted to the frame and the style of bolts. Page #227 describes the link and bushing. We probably need to describe the sway bar rubber bushing, bracket that bolts to the frame and the attaching bolts a little better.

                    Ray,

In that old post, Tom Russo said “seems I recall that bolt to be about 1 3/4" in length.” But the conclusion from that thread is that it was between 1.375” and 1.42”. In my experience a variation of 0.040”, or even 1/16”, is not uncommon when measuring dog point bolts, especially used ones, where the pointed tip is often rusted away or broken off.

Not the best picture, but it's a 71, in the shop and on the lift. I've tried everyway possible to rotaate the picture, but it keeps coming out this way. Make believe your laying on the ground, on your side, looking at the car....

The bolt holding the sway bar bracket to the frame measures 1.45 under the flat washer to the pointed end. The bolts are long to help draw the bracket to the frame, collapsing the rubber. It's an indented hex head, with a head mark of ELH. The washer is a captive washer. I believe the bolts were either a black phosphate or a dark natural finish from heat treating.

The bracket is dip painted semi-gloss black.

The link bolt measures 5-3/4" long. The center spacer is about 1-3/4" long, with a seam running lengthwise. The bolt hex is 9/16", even though the bolt is 5/16" diameter, fine thread. The nut is also 9/16". All of the hardware was a zinc plated.

                      What am I missing???

I thought that you and I had tossed around the idea of the upper nut being silver cadmium plated instead of zinc. Even in your photo of well-aged parts, the color differs from everything else.

There is a better example of original finishes on a 1971; I just don't know where it is at the moment.

your photos post sideways due to your camera settings in your iPhone. You need to lock the auto-rotate function before you take photos.
You can experiment with this a little in the Test Forum. Here is a recent thread on the issue from the Help & Support Forum.
