Re: 1974 454 Power Steering Belt
Vince,Maybe give Quanta a call. Maybe there is another belt according to how your car is optioned? If you have the old belt maybe take a measurement of how long it is that may help them. If you have the original belt there maybe a part number on belt.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 1974 454 Power Steering Belt
Hello!
I have a totally original 454 with power steering. I am attempting to install a new dated power steering belt from quantra but the belt seems a bit too small to fit even after the pump has been pivoted all the way inward to the max to accommodate a belt change. Has anyone been through this before? Is there a trick to getting this belt on? Having a senior moment. Thanks in advance for any input….
Thanks,
Vince

Assuming the car does not have C-60, the correct belt for your application is a GM #9433626 or GM #9433741. These belts are 15/32" X 44".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1974 454 Power Steering Belt
Thanks guys! I hope you all had a safe and happy 4th!
I will give Quantra a call. It's worth a shot. Car is a 454 with power steering and C60 with 26,000 original miles. I compared the old (Gates) PS belt to the new before the attempted install. It looked very similar thus I didn't think it wouldn't turn out to be a battle. I may try and bump it on with the starter.

Re: 1974 454 Power Steering Belt
Vince, you maybe able to remove the adjustment bolt let it slide down to install belt over pulleys?? Then put tension on belt and reinstall bolt. Just be careful not to over tighten those Quanta belts are not the best.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 1974 454 Power Steering Belt
Hi Edward!
Thanks for the suggestion! The 1974 PS pump has a stud opposed to a bolt and will only allow for limited adjustment. Only way to slide it down any further is to remove the pivot bolt. However we are not sure we will be able to slide the bolt back in once the belt is over the pulley. It may come to this tomorrow once we give it another try possibly after a few ice cold cans of instant mechanic! Thanks again! Vince- Top
