    Saying Goodbye to a friend...

Well, almost 35 years to the day(my birthday), my '59 went into a temporary garage and loaded up onto a boat in Savannah GA on its way to Austria.

Back in January, Cathie and I decided to empty the garages of my '59 and her 2 Jags, her '72 for 30 years.

    DSC06297.jpg

Lots of fun, memories, and tinkering(mostly her Jags....lol). We hadn't been using them for the last several years so we both decided to let them go.

The best fun we had in the '59 was in '97 when we took a vacation in July and drove it from home in southern NH up to Lake Placid NY to the NCRS Nationals. Cool Vermont air through the Green Mountain back roads to the B&B at the base of Whiteface Mountain. We drove it up the mountain auto road to the lot for the elevator ride to the peak.

We had a great time at the event, looking at cars and meeting everyone. This is when she fell in love with the '63 Coupes.

Jump ahead to '08, I found one for her in Virginia, a Silver Blue 300 HP Powerglide. After a few years of restoring and driving it was acquired by a nice gentleman from Graz Austria.

No one here wanted to buy it after a long sales effort. He and I became friends after its boat ride. After meeting at the FL Regional with his friends 5 years later, another one of his friends came to Florida on holiday. He and his wife and Cathie and I spent a day together in our garage with the cars and a car show that afternoon. Great fun. He is also into US Military vehicles and always sends me pictures.

So both Austrians heard my '59 and the Jags were for sale, called me on the phone one morning and "asked" me if they and 2 other friends could buy all 3 cars. That's right, 4 owners for 3 cars.

    We said..... "Oh-Kaay".

I had to do a list of things to get them to my standards and thankfully the guys told me to take my time. It went somewhat well with some glitches along the way but the result was accomplished.

I also helped the guys with overseas shipping tasks and coordinated with a export specialist. This was a fun learning experience.

    I'll miss my '59.

I've been tracking it since it left Savannah to follow along for the ride over. All due there July 1.

Will I miss the two V12 Jags? Well, you know, one of those love-hate relationships.

My C6 is now 14 years old. Maybe a oil change.... lol.

Actually, my body got a real workout getting the 3 cars ready. I had to give up selfie body offs 3 years ago as the old cervical stenosis got to me and some eye issues. Doing ok now, so I'm just going to restore small Corvette items from now on. No more grunt work. I have lots of stuff on the shelves I've put aside for years.

I also have several inventions I need to continue on, auto tools and auto upgrades that I want to get finished.

I totally "get it"; up close and personal.

My split window was just sold to a collector in Africa for a very good price.
Between vision problems and my local pals exiting the hobby and my increasing inability to do my own work - it was time.

This "word of mouth" deal fell in my lap before I even had time to advertise the car on any medium whatsoever.
Like Rich, I' will be "gussying" up many of my original parts stash and offering the items for sale.

              Rich,
I have to say I'm a little sad to see your 59 ( a gorgeous car) go after so long (have mine 44 years now) as I've followed it's journey through your restoration posts over the years, but I'm glad you are happy with your decision in the grand scheme of things. I've really appreciated all your highly detailed restoration threads on that car and the many others you've done and generously shared with us which continue to help many.

Knowing the level of detail and high quality of work you do, those folks were very lucky to have been able to purchase your cars and I'm sure they know that.

I am glad you will continue to stay involved with the old Corvettes as your time permits and wish you well.

                    Rich & Frank,
You guys make me feel a little better about myself. I just turned 75 and the pleasure I used to get working on these cars has become a drag. I just sold my 38,000 mile 68 BB convertible and now am close to selling my 62 fuelie that I've owned over 46 years. Getting old truly sucks but it's the right thing to do. Rich

Re: Saying Goodbye to a friend...

Dan - Thanks. It was tough deciding. It took 3 years of a few sleepless nights. I miss its beautiful lines whenever walking in the garage. Same goes for the Jag Etype. The memories....

Here's one. 30 years ago Cathie and I would take the 2 boys for Sunday drives. Cathie always wanted me to drive, her up front and the 2 boys(10 & 11) seated in the back in the 2+2. Lots of fun, mini golf, etc, then ice cream stand later.

Jump forward 25 years. Both were in town visiting. Sebring Historic races happening.

Dad and the boys took off for the day there. Jaguar was featured Marque. Cathie said you guys go.

We had a blast. I let the 2 boys share driving to and from, about 2 hours each way.

Guess who sat in the back seat?

It felt "Twilight Zone" weird, but so much fun.

Frank, Yours is so awesome. I know it well too. Ill never forget that water pump problem(s)..... LOL
The buyer got a awesome car. Be proud.

Dave, Yes, we left 3 days later. Had to pack! We travelled north, spent 7 nights at 6 different campgrounds. Niagara Falls was great. Then seafood on the River in North Tonawanda.
                        Great time.

Here is the new rig! Awesome new chapter.

Chuck's 65 went to the right place my friend. It makes me smile knowing you're continuing his legacy.

Greg, Thanks! Hope to see you and the Northeast guys soon.

Rich, Yes the body talked to me and said its time. But hang on as long as you can.

                        ....

The ship arrived in Hamburg July 4, after a 3 day detour to another port. The cans then took a train ride a few days later to their new homes in Graz, Austria to be opened up at the Customs import facility.

The new owners arranged offload and saw them for the first time on Wednesday. All went well, batteries were reconnected and all 3 started up and were moved to a holding area.

Here's a video when the 59 found it's first view of Austrian air.....

The Customs folks spent over a hour on each car to inspect them, checking titles, vins, etc. All went well. Then they have to go through their paperwork and other legal checks through Interpol and will be released some time next week if they pass the process.

Strange to see my '59 in a new place so far away. The new owner is very excited. I'll try to get him to join NCRS so he can have fun and get involved in our organization over there in Europe.

Here are some photos that were sent to me on the big day. There's one with the new happy owner. We have conversed quite a bit and he's been very anxious to get it. He's a friend of two of my friends over there and when they told him my car was for sale they told him he had to buy it. One bought our '63 SWC 10 years ago. Also a shot of Cathie's Jags now owned by my two friends, and a video of her '72 coming out of the container.

                            Hey Rich,

It seems I'm hearing big sighs of relief all the way up here from Florida and Austria!
Bet you're glad (in one way) that's all over...a little sad in other ways...
But at least they got there safe and sound!
I can't believe all the work you did getting those cars ready for the new owners...they are lucky indeed to have a seller like you. Not many do what you did when they sell a car...
Congrats to you on all counts!
                            thx,
                            Mark
