Here's a question that may be better asked of the Florida Motor Vehicle dept, (I'm trying to avoid making that call and explaining this) but I wanted to use a vintage plate on my '69, however Florida back then had a 1968-1969 dated plate and a 1969-1970 plate. Anyone know if either would work? Anyone go through the process? I read in a prior post that you need to send the plate to Tallahassee and get it approved first. That's fine, but want to work out the details and the process first. Thanks again. Back here with another car after 15 years so it's great to be a part of this community.

Re: Use of Florida vintage license plates
Hi Steven,
I have a 1969-1970 Florida plate on my 1970. It's been about 15 years, but I recall talking to my local DMV, then they referred me to Tallahassee. After I talked with Tallahassee, I sent it to them with the registration fees, they re-registered it, and sent it back with the annual yellow renewal sticker on it.
As far as if a 1970-1971 plate would work on my car, I'm not sure, but I would think so. I did not get questioned on it for a 1969-1970 plate, so I think you'd be fine with either choice for yours. Good luck

Re: Use of Florida vintage license plates
Steven,
Authenticated tag info for Florida can be found here...
Section III Paragraph E has the details. (PDF pg 4)
The tag must be original and unrestored. It's sent to Tallahasee for verification/approval. I had gone through the process for a 59 and the wife's 72 Jag years ago. It takes a week or so for them to get it back to you. When you send it, use a secure method with signature required.
More info can be found here too....
You can also use this tool to check tag number availability. As I recall only 6 characters are allowed so when shopping for tags keep that in mind.

Re: Use of Florida vintage license plates
Rich has it right - I have registered many YOM plates in Florida and Tallahassee has the final word. I reemphasize the guidance to NOT restore the tag prior to submission for approved use. My last submissions took more like 3 weeks, it may be longer now. According to my nephew working in the Florida DMV, they are overwhelmed registering cars for norther transplants for the last 12-14 months.- Top

Re: Use of Florida vintage license plates
Rich, I can't thank you enough for the links to the state DMV and the help it gave me. Based on those guidelines, I've already purchased a plate from Jeff (the license plate guy) and have the letter written that will accompany the plate to Tallahassee. You made the work that much easier. Much appreciated.- Top

Re: Use of Florida vintage license plates
Steven, Glad to assist....
Owen, I think they want to ensure the reflective surfaces are intact and not just painted over. I believe they have a procedure to test them.
If it's not in good condition they won't accept it anyway, so if it is good enough for them to accept, I guess when you get it back all bets are off and you could do whatever you want.

PS I'm on spotty smartphone WiFi and data at campgrounds along the northeast lately so hopefully these messages work.- Top
