FYI - Brake Drum Relining / Restoring

Not long ago I was looking into options of restoring brake drums..mainly in the context of big brake drums given they haven't been reproduced for decades and there are so few big brake cars.

I ran across an answer on how J&G Brake Drum Relining does it from the Binder forum:

"Yesterday I got call from Don, owner of J & G Brake Drum Relining announcing my old brake shoes arrived. Since several folks here were asking bout his methods, I asked him what the rebuild process was for Iron Drums.

Don told me he first bead blasts the old drum to clean'en up, then turn it to square and true the inner surface to receive an iron sleeve which he has in various sizes to fit mostly anything less than 14" in dia on hand. Once the sleeve and old drum fit correctly he applies a high temperature epoxy (good to 1500 degrees) to matting surfaces and presses them together then two holes are drilled and iron pins are installed to stake both drum and sleeve so sleeve can't rotate if epoxy fails. Once epoxy sets, the sleeve is turned to the factory dia., and outer surface of drum is painted. Next step is to reline old shoes, and curve them to fit perfectly to new sleeve.

I asked him about splatter weld. He said that method won't hold up to braking friction and tends to flake off under hard use.

With larger drums he has a foundry cast custom sleeves."

I also reached out to Don and asked him about their ability to relign shoes and their reproduction of the HD brake shoes.

we do reproduce 1957-1962 shoes with the correct puck layout and also the 1963 & 64 big shoes. We hope to use the customers shoes but have found that most have been lost or destroyed so we are know making new shoes

we only use a product called Velet Touch which was very popular back in the later 50's to the mid 60's. This product was big for car owners that were not races and didn't need matalic material.

Thanks for this info, with 3 J56 '63-'64s I was hoping to find someone who can get them in shape as they wear.

I have this being done right now. Does anyone know the factory specs for finned brake drums? I can't find the official info anywhere.

I don't know what "specs" you are looking for. but the 1963 Corvette Shop Manual, '64 Supplement and AMA specs that you can download from the GM Heritage site are the places to start.

Thanks. I was meaning the diameter of the inside of the drum. Consensus seems to be 11.00
