am having trouble with shifter. #rd and 4th gear are great, reverse is great. I can get it into second if I bang it. I was only able to get into first once since I have got it started. The car is buttoned up so I am unable to fit gauge in. Does anyone have any thoughts? shall I lengthen or shorten 1-2 linkage by an 1/8 of a turn? Don't want to play around with 3-4 and reverse since they work great. car has 66 big block coupe with ps,pb,air con etc

Re: shifter engagement
Place shifter in neutral position.......
I would start by disconnecting the rod for 1-2. from the transmission arm. DO NOT ADJUST ANYTHING AT THIS POINT!!!! Now cycle the 1-2 shifter arm on the transmission to make sure it is in the neutral detent and you can get it into gear. Now see if the rod will re-insert into the arm without ANY adjustment. If you can re-insert then, IMHO the shifter should be ok. Another suggestion is; make a "gauge tool" that is the correct width but is made from some thin metal that you can bend to get into the tight clearance space under the car.
Is this problem the result of a transmission overhaul, after which this is the first time you have attempted to get the transmission into first gear?
Good luck- Top

Re: shifter engagement
I did have transmission overhauled but I have driven it since in first and second gear. the plate that holds the linkage cracked and so I replaced it and it has been difficult since then. I think it is the linkage. I will try to find a malleable metal and make a longer gauge. I have a small metal gauge from li corvette that I can use as a template. thanks so much- Top
