    70 LT-1 while I'm at it. Pics

Changing oil, chasing oil leak. Not getting any dripping on the garage floor. When I come back from a drive I see some oil splatter on the exhaust pipes and bell housing.Mostly in the rear area but some from the front pan seal as well.Found the rear pan rubber seal a bit distorted. Wondering if this could be a leak source . Have a one piece felpro oil pan gasket I plan to install.

Also a new rear main seal, but when I pulled the housing cover im not seeing any oil on the flywheel. Wonder if I should just change it while the pans out.

Pan gasket, main seal, or both? Going through a 1/4 every 3-400 miles

Rear main looks perfectly fine. What I can see of the pan gasket area looks pretty dry, as well. How many miles on your LT1? You'd have to have a pretty severe leak to go through a quart of oil every 3-400 miles.

Had it 2 years. Put less tha 1k. Dont think the rebuild has more than a few thousand. 59k right now. Underside is clean and dry other than the splatter, which appears to be blown around after a drive.

Not smoking, so I dont know if it's being burn past bad valves seals. Compression is good and so is leak down. Got me baffled.

Interesting. Think I'm pulling the pan anyway. Drained the oil and its looks like liquid graphite. Surprising since I've been putting a 1/4 of Brad Penn 10-40 green stuff every 300 miles.

Cut the filter up. Not seeing or feeling any metal. Using 112 sunoco keaded race fuel mix with ultra 93. Can the leaded fuel be attributing to the graphite color?

                Two things:

                1. If the oil from mine ever looked like that I'd be chasing every gearhead I know for their opinion!
                2. I'm guessing 1/4 = 1 quart
                3. Ooops ;-) , What is Brad Pen 'green stuff'?

Breaking in a fresh rebuild with high zinc content oil will sometimes take longer for the rings to seat. Are they chrome or cast rings? Are you losing any coolant?
                    It's a good life!

Dont know about the rings. No coolant loss
