    George,

I know our fellow DB posters have already answered your concern, but my two cents is that all Survivor/Bowtie cars that I have observed with the rubber oil cap was always painted. Like our friend Joe L. indicated, they were definitely on the engine prior to painting. Also, this right in line with the research that I and my judging collages have done with personnel from the Flint Engine Assembly Plant.
You need to look at more engine compartments.
None of the 72s I own or work on have a painted oil cap, nor does my 71.
All base motor cars with painted valve covers.

Do you know these unpainted caps to be original to the cars? Like I previously mentioned, these caps rather quickly become hardened and very difficult to remove or install. So, many may have been replaced early in a car's life.

        Yes, they are.
Personally I find black caps to outnumber orange caps.
