    63 fuel filler cap

Rumor has it that the gas cap is yet another 63 only part. True? If so, what is different/special about it.

    Regards,
    Jerry

Yes it is. The '63 fuel cap has a smaller vent hole than the 1964 and up caps. See the attached pictures. This is a spare I have that I was going to restore this winter.

        This is a comparison pic.

Note the two on the left has a much larger hole!

            Joe,

Is it just the pictures or do the two on the left have a small metal 'collar' around the hole and a slight shoulder while the 63 has a simple hole on a smooth sloped surface? Is there an early and a late version? :-)

Yes, the two later model 64 and up have some sleeve or stamped object in the vent hole. And yes, there was an early and late 63 but it was an internal baffle having to do with venting.

                To be precise...

The 1st design fuel cap was used from the beginning of 1963 production and as late as VIN 20,000. The underside center of the cap has a 1/16" hole and vents openly to the atmosphere.

A 2nd design gas cap was used for the remainder of 1963 and through the end of 1964 production. Centered on its underside is a flanged hole and series of internal valves that release pressure to the atmosphere.
