63 vs. 64-67 Center Exhaust Hanger

I am getting close to being ready to reinstall the body on my 340HP '63 coupe and I just realized that it has the 64-67 style center exhaust hanger. I know that owner #2 put homemade side pipes on back in the '60s and owner #3 later removed them and put a non OEM system on so I guess at the time it was cheaper and easier for him to source the later style hanger. This project is a refurbishment rather than a restoration so at this point correctness is not a huge issue on anything that can be easily changed out later. I have a complete 2 1/2" system from Corvette Central that I will be installing.

My question is this; Even though the 64-67 hanger "Appears" to be compatible is it functionally the same as 63 or is there some subtle difference that is going to cause a problem lining things up?

Are you getting the car judged? If so, you really should have a 1963 Hanger. If not, the 64-67 works just as well.

The only reason to use the complex '63 hanger would be if the vehicle is being judged.

The '64-'67 hanger is simpler, stronger, and superior in every way. If judging isn't a consideration, there is no reason to NOT use the later hanger.

Thanks for your comments guys. This car will likely never see a judging field so I am not too concerned with originality. It will also never be sold as it will be staying in the family after me. I had to lift the body off to get some frame rust repaired so while respecting originality or correctness where I could I also replaced a lot of worn parts where it made sense to do so while it was apart. It is an early car that is numbers matching in several areas but has been molested enough that it would be more than I would want to take on to get it up to snuff for judging.

              Norm,

The original 63 exhaust pipes are a female end at the front pipe and a male end on the rear pipe. The 64-67 system corrected this but if you are using a 63 pipe set up make sure the 64-67 hanger you have will allow the clamp to compress the two pipes. Someone over on the C/F tried to use a 63 exhaust with the later hanger and reported that the clamp was to far rearward I believe, (the spacing was off).

Thanks for the tip Tim. I have the front pipes connected to the manifolds right now and I believe they terminated in line with the bracket but I will double check that later today. Norm
