    windshield moulding upper

I am working on a 1969 coupe , just had painted. When i went to put upper windshield moulding on ,i have a big gap between this moulding and the top center moulding where they meet top of windshield. Looking at assembly manual page j117 they show a seal part number 3966679 . Is anyone familiar with this part. The gap is a 1/4 inch i do not know how to upload pictures .

    Francais, S
Sorry but I don't remember that seal when I replaced my windshield but if I had to guess I'd say that it was a foam type that was placed on the top of the windshield frame before the moldings 3966658 & 3966601 were installed and should have no influence with your upper molding fitment issues.

What I found when I replaced my windshield is that the guys that previously replaced it weren't too gentle with the moldings and there were gaps where I thought there shouldn't be, especially with the upper trim. What I ended up doing was trial fitting the windshield, making sure it wasn't sitting too low towards the frame and then gently hand forming the trim so that it all fit nice and even with the adjacent trim and nice and flush against the windshield. It's not hard but it did take time to bend and trial fit over and over until it looked proper.

thanks Greg i kind a did the same thing to fit it to the windshield , the gap i am talking about is on top of windshield frame . I put the roof center support reveal moulding on,#396658 and the two chrome corner pieces on#396601=02 . These three form one side, then i put the long windshield reveal moulding on into the clips . All the way across is a 1/4 inch gap , when i took apart there was a very ugly caulk joint i thought i could do better but obviously not . I looked at my friends 68 and he had a black caulk joint , did not look too bad. I am just wondering what product people have put there , is there a different color. The 5th edition book shows a silver colored sealant where the side pieces see the upper on page 81 . Is this product a possibility . If so what is it. any help would greatly appreciated

I don't think my gap was 1/4" but it might have been. I should have taken some pics before caulking it but I remember being so happy that I finally had it in and could move on!

I had some old silver silicone caulking from a previous project that I used. I don't know how critical judging is on this one detail but I'd hope that any silver silicon caulking would pass so with that just google it. I did and lots of options came up. If I'm wrong on this I hope someone corrects me.

The original was definitely not silicone caulking, and I sure wouldn’t use that.

Gray plumber’s putty is closer, though it was likely a silver/gray version of the “dum dum” black putty available now as strip caulk.
Mortite gray weatherstrip caulk might be another option. I’ve thought about buying some to test it, just haven’t done that yet.

Some say silver, some say gray.
I've seen some of either. Recently I saw one with the molding removed that appeared to have originally been gray that faded more to tan/peach.

As noted, Mortite is on the short list. I've heard that plumber's putty stays too sticky, and picks up dirt, so I would likely not use that.
Previously I've painted black Strip-Calk using a silver metallic paint pen, and that worked fine.
