    Dash wire harness!

    Hello all,
I am looking for guidance on whether i should replace my dash wire harness. My fuse block has some rust and my courtesy light socket wire will need replacement. The harness is original. What would be the main reason to replace the harness? My thought is that while everyhing is removed now is the time, but i am trying to justify the money.

    Thanks

    Mike

i just finished restoring the original dash harness in our 65 FI. its a heck of a lot easier to do on the work bench. i wire brushed all terminals then lub'ed them with dielectric paste. welcome to NCRS, lots of knowledgable folks herein. mike mccagh

In addition to refurbishing all the terminals as recommended by Mike, you can also get a roll (or two) of non-adhesive black electric tape (Lectric Limited sells it) in the "correct" width (1 inch I think - but check your AIM first) and then, re-wrap the harness as needed. It will look and function as good as new. Caution - when disconnecting plug-in contacts, especially on the fuse block, easy does it, they can break easily.

Mike and others are adept in restoring harnesses. They can see, feel and sense where a problem area is. On my 63 wires were cracked and spliced in many places. As I recall GM gave a life expectancy of 15 years to a harness. Saying that I replaced every wire in the car. You can ask opinions as to who makes the best reproduction harnesses. I vote for M&H. http://www.wiringharness.com/ Good Luck.

Thanks Mike. Looks like you have restored many harness. What would be a trigger for you to replace the harness?

if , say a foot or two of the insulation was melted from a short , or bubba cut the terminal ends on MANY terminals, I'd go with a repo harness. mike

M&H is my preferred harness maker.

For a 66, I would also add fusible link protection like 67 did. If mine, I would simply use a 67 harness and modify the one difference between the two, Pressure Differential Brake Lamp Circuit.
edit, no. Looks like big difference in directional switch plugs so not that simple.

So back to adding fusible links.

PS pretty sure Zip Corvette stocks theirs from M&H.

I'm going with M&H also as I have changed several C-2 harnesses with them. There are just too many errors with other companies wiring harnesses and it's a pain to chase down errors when one light works and the other doesn't!

Who is your favorite supplier of wire harnesses?

M&H gets my vote as well; I'd be leery of a 60 year old harness on a car driven very much, on a garage queen or survivor, different story of course.

James, how long have you had the harness? And has it been used?

                              Thanks
