    LOF Glass Question

Did Chevrolet use "LOF" glass from prior year on the next model year? My glass codes for my 66 are as follows:

    Windshield VJ, Shaded Soft Ray
Pass vent VA, EZ Ray Eye
    Pass window NA, Soft Ray
    Drive vent YJ, Soft Ray
    Drive window YJ, Soft Ray
    Rear window VJ, Soft Ray

As per the Corvette Spec Guide the month codes are Oct, Dec, Jan and the years all fit within my 66 model year. Car build date is 02/17/66.

    Paul,

Yes, the glass can be dated up to 1 year before your build date, but usually is much closer in time, like many of your pieces are. Obviously, your pass vent window with a VA code for Dec 1966 is not correct for your car.

Not to hijack but this is my May split window windshield labeling; clearly LOF but I suspect a service replacement (with the DOT labeling)- do the numbers tell me anything ?

"E-Z-EYE" & "FLOAT" are LOF Trademarks that indicate replacement (aftermarket) glass. As Gary has already pointed out, your passenger vent glass had a December 1966 date on your February 1966 car.

"SOFT-RAY" & "FLO-LITE" are General Motors Trademarks. ("E-Z-EYE" & "FLOAT" were OEM on passenger cars, but NOT on Corvette)

AS-1 is Clearest, laminated windshield glass.

DOT 177 is DOT Code for L-N Safety Glass S.A. of Mexicali, Mexico (LOF's aftermarket glass facility).

M61 is an internal LOF manufacturing code.

"N J" indicates glass was manufactured in January 1965, or January 1978, or January 1991.

Not sure of "DW636". (My 1980 also has this LOF replacement glass with a similar glass "bug", however, it shows "DW893".)

Gary and David, Thanks for that info. I became suspect when I saw the EZ Eye Soft Ray title.

I was born in Ottawa, IL. and lived about a half mile from the plant. My dad and a couple Uncles worked there at one time. I walked to kindergarten just a few blocks from the plant. The area the plant was in was called Naplate. We lived up against the quarry on Ottawa Ave. Brings back memories!

John:Yes memories for me also. Many People from where I live(20 Miles Away) worked at that plant. Those jobs where the
highest pay in the area. GM had an exclusive contract with LOF. ALL GM VEHICLES HAD THIS GLASS. ALL CORVETTES
IN THAT TIME FRAME HAD GLASS MADE IN OTTAWA IL.! Remember the story told to me that when GM gave the Blueprints
(Months before production of the car)for the 63 Split Window (Back Glass) the workers where trying to put together in their minds what the car would look like! Larry

windshield was made and installed in the car. Picture below. Was very very lucky that the windshield survived all those years
w/o a rock chip or crack. Mileage from Ottawa Il to St.Louis was around 230 miles. Many trucks left Ottawa to St. Louis.
