    Paint Deduction on restored car

I am in the process of trying to get my 67 ready for its third round of judging - it has twice scored 4008 gross 89.4 in Texas in 2011 and 90.3 in New Orleans in 2013. Only difference in the net score was driving points.

My question is around differences in the paint deduction - In 2011 the deduction was 11 for over restored paint - in 2013 the deduction was 90 points for same description. There was no change in the car during this time.

I realize this is dated inspection time but 79 points is a large swing - what type of deduction should I reasonably expect in 21.

Ken, I do not believe we can answer that question with seeing the car in person. If you look at the Exterior judging sheets for a C2 there are 45 points in the originality column and 40 in the condition column, You can't lose 90 points, 85 is the max deduction.

The paint deduction is a Standard Deduction. It either 0%, 20%, 30%, 70% or 100%. If you lose 100% on the originality you lose 100% on the condition, thus the 85 points. You can lose 70% on the originality but get all the condition points, thus a loss of 32 points.

Ken, What were the comments on the Paint line by the judge? Did it have anything to do with the Stinger Stripes?

I know there's a standard deduction flow chart, but it seems harsh a car can earn a 100% deduction if it has some sort of paint on it. Especially if it's a standard color for that year.

Mark, Color is a different line item. The Paint line is for application.

Ok, your last event was 8 years ago. The books are closed on that when you drove away. Saying that, let's get ready for the next event.

Paint - stripe 10 off. That has to be the stinger, but the comment really doesn't help fix the problem. I suggest you get some real measurements from a Sting hood and measure against your stinger paint. This particular problem leads to a 100% deduction.

                over spray std over resto. That's a 20% deduction ( 9 points )

At your next event, ensure you have the judges explain their decision and comments in detail. There is an escalation process. It's in the Judging Reference Manual as I recall.

                  Ken,
My 67 coupe Marina Blue BB lost 85 points under "Body Paint" because I had a Base/Clear paint finish at the 2010 National Convention.
The same car and paint finish had a 32 point deduction at the Greenville 2018 regional.
Maybe if I wait a few more years the deduction will be down to "0"....
