Fiberglass Panel Bonding Adhesive - 1965

I found that the splash panel behind the driver's side left rear wheel has come loose from the fender. I've prepped and cleaned it for re-bonding.

What is a readily available panel adhesive that is close to the original dark gray or black color? What have others used?

    Thanks,

    James West

James I have a can of it in my shop. I'll get the details for you when I get out there.

      Rich,

Is it something that can be applied with a caulking gun?

      Thanks,

      James

James. here's a file photo I found, I can't find mine but recall Adtech.... It's a black paste that needs to be mixed with hardener.

You could also use the Black 3M 8115 epoxy but it's glossier and in a tube but very pricey and needs a special gun.

Another option is Vette Panel Adhesive, a bonding/filler paste with hardener, and just shoot a little blackout over it when done.

          James,
I had the same problem with the right side and used the 3M 8115. As Rich said it is a little expensive and you need the special gun. My local auto parts store lends out the gun if you buy the product from them, yours may do the same. It may be a bit glossier black than the original but a little black out should hide it.
Lord Fusor is another product, however I have not used it.
          Kind regards

Yes and if James wants to, he could borrow a cake frosting paper syringe from his favorite chef and use the VPA or facsimile. Just make sure you clean it before you return it James!

That's what the factory used. There's a photo around here somewhere, or in Nolands book.

What parts store did you purchase it from?

              Thanks,

              James

                James,
It's just a small independent not one of the chains. If you have a local body shop that you use check with them. They may have the gun and a fresh partly used leftover cartridge.
                Rich,
You have your comedy pat on today.
The cake decorators are a little hard to use for this application. I would have adhesive all over the place and none where I needed it!
                Kind regards

Eastwood sells a SEM fiberglass panel bonding adhesive in a dual mixing cartridge for $40 that works great

The SEM 39747 Works great, but requires a special mixing gun. Eastwood sells it for $119.

James years ago GM sold epoxy called REN over the counter for early corvette panel repairs. It's still available from other sources but very pricey. I found PC-7 sold at hardware stores and on line is virtually the same product and is much cheaper. I use REN on the panel joints under areas where body paint will be and PC-7 everywhere else. They both are aluminum filled epoxy and look similar to the original production line dark joint compound. They both lean towards shades of gray. C2 cars have a dark brown colored joint compound originally and somewhere by C3 cars it looks dark grey or black.

                        Mark,

How did you apply it? Can it be put in a caulk gun applicator? I can buy the PC-7 on Amazon along with empty caulking tubes.

                        Thanks,

                        James

I use a putty knife or scraper on a piece of sheet metal made as a palette. Use the red can version of PC-7. It's thick but the putty knifes can be used in a number of techniques. I've used the pastry cones but the knifes is all that's needed. Opening or moving the gap some and than lay a bead in the joint. Position the panel and epoxy should ooze as the factory did it. I've never tried the caulk gun with it but may. I try to mix just enough for each area. These epoxies do give you plenty of work time. If RENPASTE is used, the 1250 is the one GM sold. It's made by Huntsman and distributors have changed. One is Freeman Mfg & Supply in Ohio. I've yet to invest time in tinting these brown but may try soon.

                            Red can version of PC-7????

All I found was a two-part version, one red can and one black can.

That's it. There is a blue can , marine grade. I've never bought it that small but buy just what you need. It comes in 2# 4# up to half gallon cans. It's just like RENPASTE, one can of resin and one can of hardener. 50/50 mix. It has a long shelf life and the larger the cans the cheaper.
