    Another judging manual confusion question

I have a 1967 427/400 with power steering and a 1969 427/435 with power steering. The 1967 judging manual states the pump bracket is held to the front of the block with 2 cad plated bolts and lock washers, bolts are grade 8 with TR or WB head marks. The 1969 judging manual states the pump bracket is held to the front of the block with 2 black plated bolts and lock washers. The confusion is both years use the same part number bolt, 9417756. Does anyone know the correct configuration for this bolt?

Re: Another judging manual confusion question

    Joseph,

According to a recent post by David Bartush, who has access to some GM documents with fastener specifications, GM 9417756 is 7/16 - 14 x 13/16 Plain. So, not zinc/cad and not black phosphate. Keep in mind that a lot of “plain” nuts, bolts and washers can be mistaken for black phosphate, especially in poor lighting, or in the case of aged fasteners.

OK, but the two judging manuals say 2 different descriptions for the same part number. Is the bolt grade 8 or 5.

Joseph, go to Contacts. Locate the team leaders and send them a combined email with your question. They are the only ones that authorize change to the manuals. Posting here is good but getting to them directly is best.

            Joseph,
I have chased the identity of this bolt with no success. Please post here if you get a response.
I have a 1970 454/390 with power steering. The 1970 AIM shows a 3786494 for the upper bolt which AMK has as a 3/8 - 16 x 1" black phos bolt with a captive washer, the AIM also shows 103321 lock washers for both locations which are 3/8" split lock washers. I have run a 3/8" tap in both of these holes on my 70, and the tap goes into both holes to a depth of 1". A 7/16" tap will not fit in my threads.
Have you done any testing to see what size threads are in your block? Does your 1969 AIM show the 3786494 bolt in the upper hole? Does it also show the 103321 lock washer in both locations?
            Thanks,
            Allen
