    Re: oil pan leak

A little off topic, but I got interested in this thread for "other" car reasons. I saw "oil leak" and jumped in and went through a lot of what you guys had. Bad Repros.

Why my interest? I've spent a week or more fixing a v12 oil leak which took nearly a day to gain access to it. Then fixed or restored things while in there.
Rear main leaked, but not the seal. Crazy design. Rope seal was fine. I won't elaborate further to go astray but if curios see a few of my posts in HERE.

      Ed,
So the oil came from the timing chain cover. Made in China. The valley for the gasket was only tac welded so the oil ran thru it. The leak is fixed but I had yo get an nos oil pan and timing chain cover. I learned my lesson. don't buy Chinese made products. Always a disaster!!!hope this helps you.

        Re: oil pan leak

        Hi Rich,

Yeah, when the oil leak happened in mine, it all but crushed me. I, by myself, had spent almost everyday for a whole summer reinstalling the original engine from my 67 Vette back into the car. The night before I discovered the leak, and it was the first week of December in Western New York State, I had fired the engine for the first time. The next morning I found the puddle of oil under the car. All I could do at that time was to move the car to my garage and bag it for the winter.
The following spring, I bought a video inspection camera, as I really thought the leak was either the rear cam plug, or the rear main seal. The camera showed no sign of oil anyplace on the back of the engine! Next was to remove the pan and the rear main to check the seal, even though it looked dry. I replaced the seal according to an article in the NCRS Restorer Magazine which indicated new gasket sets had the wrong seal. Went to my machine shop guy, who also builds engines local race car owners and he sold me the correct seal, as well as the one piece pan gasket. I also made templates of the rear sealing surface of the "new GM Pan" I had put on to compare to my original pan. Those templates fit the new pan the same as the old one! However, knowing the old pan did not leak, I decided to put it back on, with the new one piece pan gasket. I have had no leak since this replacement. Why the new pan did not seal against the rubber seal, I don't know and will never know, as I sold the pan. Does make me wonder if the guy who bought the pan had the same problem!
