Muncie M20, cannot insert shift lever

Hello!

After 6 years my 1973 corvette body is back in the frame. Today I wanted to install the shift lever, the insert. That, however, does not work. I cannot drop it into the lever as it should. Please find the attached image.

I read through the assembly manual, the service manual but cannot find any hint on the reason.

At the current moment the gears are in revers and I cannot change into any forward gear, just in case that matters.

Sounds like the trans is not in neutral...2 gears engaged at once.
1) Get under the car and place all gears in neutral.
2) Perform the alignment procedure for the shifter. This may require adjusting the shifter rod lengths.
3) Now the insert should fall into place.

Insure that the arms on the transmission are in the proper location and orientation.

I did exactly that and it worked. I shifted into gear no. 4 and then I was able to insert the t-handle. After that I was able to shift into all gears. Thanks
