    Rear Suspension/Chassis Parts Black...Satin or Semi-Flat?

Getting ready to start refinishing my rear suspension strut rod bracket, differential front support bracket, rear spring plate, and differential upper support cross member. I'm looking at different shades of black paint to finish them. One being Krylon 1613 semi-flat black, Krylon satin black, SEMS trim black or possibly Rustoleum semi-gloss black.

Any suggestions on what finish to use to get close to the semi-gloss black as stated in the 1965 TIMJG.

    Thanks,

    James West

    James,

I painted a lot of chassis parts on my ‘66 using Rustoleum SG black, but for the past few years I’ve had the devil of a time with the paint blistering when using their rattle can. I dip painted my bumper brackets with Rustoleum SG bkack in quarts with substantial thinning to get the runs to look right. And I love how they came out. But I’ve given up on their rattle cans. Based on advice from Rich Mozzetta, I switched to Dupli-Color Semi-Gloss Black DA1603, which sprays very nicely from a rattle can.

      Gary,
interesting to read your post as I too have given up on Rustoleum Spray paint in the rattle can. I switched to Krylon Fusion and have been very pleased with the results. Spray pattern, adhesion, coverage etc all exceptional. The other major complaint I have with the rustoleum cams is the nozzle leaking all over the place sometimes on the very first use of the can.

        Gary and Tom,

Thanks for your replies to my question.

        Tom,

        Is the Krylon Fusion a semi-gloss or semi-flat? I've found the Duplicolor semi-gloss black DA1603 in a six-pack for $5.73/can at Amazon.

        Gary,

I've never been happy with Rustoleum paints, never wanted to dry or they blistered as you said.

        Thanks,

        James

          James,
The Krylon Fusion black is available in gloss, satin, matte and flat. I have found the satin to be a very close match for low sheen applications on my 67.

            James,

Before you buy a six-pack of the Dupli-Color SG black, buy one can and try it. It is very similar in sheen to the Rustoleum SG black. I would say they are interchangeable if you want a semi-gloss sheen, which is what the JG often describes.

I've done some testing with two different brands of paint to determine what semi-gloss black looks best for my rear suspension brackets. I tested the Duplicolor semi-gloss black #DA1603, the Rustoleum semi-gloss black, and just for comparison Krylon #1613 semi-flat black. I must say the Duplicolor semi-gloss looks the best, sprayed the best, and DRIED the best. The Rustoleum was still "tacky" 24 hours later to where you could make a indentation with my finger nail.

Thanks to everyone who gave their input. The Krylon semi-flat black #1613 which I've used for decades is still my choice for frame, and under hood touch ups.

                Thanks,

                James
