That’s a great story, on the cap. You didn’t ask but, if it were me, I would never change the cap.

Terry-I am just surprised that it took me 50 some years to notice!
Speaking of debris in the jack stowage compartment- I found a sandwich bag and two paper coffee cups in mine. (probably should have been caught at the dealership during pre-delivery)

My debris was a lot less than yous. I had just pop rivets and screws and carpet cut-offs. Except those bolts under the driver's side carpet. Those were 5/16 hex head bolts about an inch or a little more long with pointed ends. The heads are the same shade of blue as the car. They were pushed into the jute carped backing enough that I never felt them under foot. I think, without going out and counting them, that there were around four of them. The car had more then 50K miles on it before I remover the carpet for cleaning and found them. Nothing had fallen off the car (at least that I noticed) by that point and I haven't been able to figure out where they were once installed. Those remain a mystery to this day.

There were lots of should-have-beens, but we see that reality is different.

Mark-I do not intend to. ( of course, I would change the cap if there was a functional issue); but since there isn't, I will let the next caretaker deal with it.
