    Re: 1963-66 Brake Hoses

Here’s another photo of an NOS GM 3770240 front brake hose, never touched, but peeking out of its deteriorating GM packaging. Not a strong hint of a yellow chromate. This is what convinced me to get the Paragon repros, and not the bright yellow/gold ones.

Here are pictures of one of my original rear brake hose from my '65 along with one from Doc Rebuild (the one with the Goodyear rubber label) and one from ZIP.

The brake hoses sold by ZIP are made in the U.S. from rubber hose manufactured by Goodyear Rubber Company, exceeding all US Automotive Safety Standards and D.O.T. approved.

Thanks to everyone for the great pictures and detail of original hoses and what is correct, with what the repro parts look like. This is exactly the information I was looking for!

Remember, you can buy the current gold ones and dull the finish down. A bit of vinegar bath will do the job; just go slowly.

I would be interested to know the white line width of Gary's original hoses vs his painted-on white line. To me the painted one looks much wider than I have seen on originals.

              Patrick,

I measured the tracer strip width on most of the 10 or 12 60s-era NOS hoses I have, and it varied between a little over 1/8” up to 3/16”. My white stripe is 3/16”. I don’t recall if any of the NOS hoses I have had a white stripe. I recall that some were green, some rusty red. All were quite faded, as you can imagine after 50+ years. The ‘66 JG says red, orange and white have been observed. I only chose white because I didn’t want to get into which shade of red or orange is correct.

But to Patrick’s point, does anyone have an NOS period-correct (GM/Delco) hose with the white stripe, who could measure the stripe width?

                Hello Patrick,

When you say "a bit of vinegar bath" can you explain what you mean and the process you use?

                Thanks!

                      Gary's idea works too.

You can make the gold color "thinner" by having the part spend less time in the weak acid. Take the part in and out of the bath until you have a hint of gold but not the GOLD color that's on it now.

As Gary notes, there is zinc underneath so you won't hurt it.

So I'm looking on the ZIP website for rear brake hoses that have the gold tint. All they show are the ones with the silver zinc/cad finish. Is there another brake line that I'm not seeing or do you have to specify what you want?

                          James,

I ordered the kit from Zip and it is silver finish. I have had great success with specific questions about part when I work with Matt Gamble at Zip. He is in sales, and if he can't tell from the website, he will walk to the warehouse, pull the parts and call me back with them in hand. You may give him a call, tell him I recommended him to you

I did a little research today regarding the fornt and rear brake lines from ZIP. I spoke with Matt Gamble at ZIP and inquired about the rear brake lines and if they had any rear brake lines in stock. I specifically asked if they had the gold zinc finish. He asked me to hold for a few minutes and came back and said at this time they onlt have the silver zinc finish rear lines, p/n ZDB-17. He said he has seen them in the gold zinc. I aslo asked about the front lines and he replied they did have them in the gold zinc finish, p/n DB-1308. He told me to check back in about a month to see if they have received any.
