1973 Coupe with Tilt/Telescope Column, Key Will Not Rotate Past Lock to Accessory

Key works in all positions but will not rotate counter clockwise to accessory position.

It has a new key cylinder.

Moves to all positions except accessory.

Any ideas what to troubleshoot and repair?

Roger, the first thing I would check is the proper connection and function of your interlock cable from the transmission to the steering column.

On my 4 speed car, the only time I can rotate my key back to the ACC function is when the car is put into reverse which engages the cable to the column. I would imagine the same is true for automatic cars in the Park position.

There is a small amount of adjustment of the cable at the firewall side at the base of the column. If the cable is connected and functioning properly, you may have something worn or broken inside the column assembly.

Hope this helps, perhaps others will chime in to confirm or deny.

My steering gear was leaking badly from the pitman shaft seal. Since I don't have the knowledge (and possibly not the tools) to rebuild it, I sent it to Bair's late last year.
