    67 Stamp Pad Anomalies

    HI:

I was recently offered a 67 small block roadster for a fair price. The car is 300HP, has an automatic and a few options. Tank sheet & POP are present. All the numbers, stampings, date codes etc all present correctly for such a car.

Upon inspection of the stamp pad I discovered that the VIN derivative is stamped "up-side down". The stamp is correct with proper appearing letters and numbers. Broach marks are faint but visible.

My question is this.... can anyone provide some first hand information on how is this anomaly is treated from a judging perspective?

Does anyone have direct experience with judging this type of issue? Or, have you owned such a car and how was it judged?

I have only seen this situation one time previously (on a 65 365HP car). I have heard about it many times in the past but have not had to deal with it from a judging or ownership perspective.

Thanks for any information that you can provide.

    Regards
    Bill

I have seen that on a 65 396 that was believed original.

Bill, I have a number of upside-down '67 VIN pads in my files. They range from a 300 HP automatic like the one you're looking at to a 435 HP motor. The 300 horse automatic I found many years ago in horrible condition locally. I took a pencil tracing of that pad.

rod price, a deceased 67 team leader, ran a 67 435 roadster thru the system years ago and it had an inverted vin #. it passed its pad inspection. mike mccagh

you know the vin stamp is real, but it would have to take a deduction for Not Typical Factory Production, wouldn't it?

No offense taken at all Dave. My understanding is that Flight judging evaluates what is typical of factory production, and Bowtie judging evaluates what is original factory production. Am I slicing and dicing too finely?

                    Don,
I think so. Others may not agree. As we have learned over the years common sense should be a big part of the judging process and this example clearly shows a factory human error. Why should a perfectly good stamp pad suffer for that. Learn from it and move on. Deducts for things like this only serve to annoy the car owners and serve no positive purpose IMO.

i'd never take a deduct for an inverted vin # if the rest of the stamping was real mccoy. mike

Oddly enough I discovered another car with an inverted stamping....just 5 numbers apart from this one.....

Someone new on the line? Someone giving the regular stamp guy a break? Someone jut not paying attention???

It has been kicked around a lot that the line never stopped for minor issues.....

i.e. The guys who built the cars never said "Holy cow we gotta fix that problem. if we don't then fifty years from now the NCRS is gonna go crazy!!"

Thanks to everyone who chipped in on this question!!!

                            Best Regards
                            Bill
