Installing shielding in '67 A/C car

I have a '67 base engine car with factory A/C.

Recently, I had the valve seals replaced on both heads by a shop, and in the process they removed all the ignition shielding. I offered to reinstall the shielding to save them the trouble, and me some expense.

I've been able to reinstall the left (passenger) side spark plug shields, and the top shielding.

However, I'm having real trouble fitting the two spark plug shields that go along the right (driver) side of the engine, because the A/C stuff is in the way.

I spent about half an hour hunched over the engine fighting with these shields, trying to angle them any way possible to get them into position. I had to give up once my back started to hurt too much. I was able to finagle the left rear shield almost into place, but the brackets wouldn't line up with the holes in the shield, and there wasn't enough room to get my socket wrench into place to loosen the manifold bolts to adjust the brackets so they'd line up with the shield. I also couldn't get the front shield into place underneath the A/C compressor from above.

So, anyone have any tips on how to get those darned shields on under the A/C equipment? Do they have to go in from underneath the car?

    Thanks

    Alex,

I have found on a/c equipped cars it is easier to install the spark plug shielding and outer stainless steel shielding from the underside of the car. You will want a set of car ramps or a floor jack and jack stands for safety. I have a '65 with a/c and that how I install the spark plugs and shielding. I have a 4-post lift so it is much easier.

    Hope this helps you.

      Thanks James for your reply.

I have a set of ramps so that'll probably be the easiest way to get the car up so I can get underneath to install the plug shields.

Alex i have an AC 67 i have used 2 awls or small phillips head screwdrivers to line up the shielding and holes at the same time. I to have a lift and do it from under neath.I have also tapered the ends of the wing screws slightly to guide them in easier. If the brackets are not on the money you will never get them in. Now is the time for new plugs if you need them. Bill

          Hi Bill,

Thanks for your tip about using an awl and tapering the wing screws to help ease the installation of the spark plug shields. I'm gonna try those!

I replaced ALL the spark plugs when I had the valve seals redone recently, so I'm good there.

          Cheers,
          Alex
