Re: Correct coating and color of rear spring leaves?
I shy away from over restored cars and don't have a whole lot of interest in restored cars unless they have at least some of the flaws - done correctly - as an original.
I consider the best compliment I can receive regarding a restoration is for someone to do a double take, & mistake the car for a a very well kept survivor or a one repaint unrestored car.... that is more gratifying than I can express.- Top

Re: Correct coating and color of rear spring leaves?
James, I agree with you! In spite of how the pictured springs appear there was substantial effort to make them look as they do. The springs were taken apart, glass beaded and cleaned, then completely sprayed with Rustoleum 93% industrial Zinc-Rich product, the bottom masked, then the ends of the top of the springs that show were painted with a coat of Cast Blast followed by a spatter job of semi gloss black after masking in an attempt to make them look untouched The final step was to use a wall paper brush on the upper side of the ends to make them seem to have been given a sloppy job of painting just the tension side and trying to imitate what would have migrated to the unpainted side. Try to picture yourself with the mindset of a bored spring manufacturer employee working the midnight shift for ten years and being given this task and mindlessly going about this endlessly - that is what I had in mind. My primary goal was to replicate this look. You may remember Dolly Parton being quoted as saying " it is expensive to look this cheap".. Reality is that sloppy work takes some extra care. Look closely at these springs for other "factory" replication. You may get a chuckle. Remember, the stated goal of the NCRS is to create a product that looks just as it did when presented to the original customer!- Top

IT takes quite a bit of effort to duplicate the choreographed chaos of a production line...
Of course it is much easier to spray everything smooth satin black rather than figure out where the paint pooled when dipped and then you can determine which hole the part was hung from so you can do the same when you dip the part.
John Hinckley has done so much for the hobby in our understanding of the assembly process,
Once I saw your post it led me to the point that I have read everything I could find on here and then the internet there is on the subject, researched the company Ionaclad - everything - the amount of information on these boards is second to none regarding original products - is there for one to absorb if they are so inclined. I typically research everything to find an exact match for original.- Top

Ed,
I bought the coating on line from Zoro Industrial Tools for $8.30 per can. The Zoro p/n is G0749581. The product is manufactured by Sprayon.

Re: Correct coating and color of rear spring leaves?
This subject has been visited many times in the past. As our other members have mentioned, the spring was coated with Ionoklad 200 L weld thru primer. I have some of the original paint from the original supplier."SOLID LIFTERS MATTER"- Top
