    63 Engine, pre-20 Dec 1962, high HP

Building a '63 and looking for the "correct" motor. B-day for the car is 20 Dec 1962. Building to a 63 Fuelie.
    Any thoughts/guidance would be appreciated.

Curt, I see that you are new to NCRS, probably joined today. Welcome aboard.

I struggled with how to answer this as we look for originality. As we know engines didn't last. They went from together to apart. So what you are looking to do is to get as close to what was there the day the car was born. I'll assume the car was born/built with fuel injection. You need a block that:
    1) has a cast date prior to the build date of the car
    2) has the correct cast number
    3) has the cars VIN stamped on the engine pad
    4) has the correct build date and codes stamped on the engine pad.
    5) has good broach marks

Items 1 and 2 above requires a good deal of searching. Items 3, 4, and 5 can be duplicated. Some say faked but you are building a restoration engine. Naturally you need the correct heads, exhaust, etc. The FI unit is a whole other story. Others will chime in.

All of my documentation is in storage as I am remodeling. I say this as the cast dates and the engine pad stamp can be timed to the cars build date. This is just a result of comparing other documentation from other cars as related to the engine and the cars build date.

You have a long road to go. I wish you luck.

      Hi Harry,
Thanks for the great reply. Good news is that I have a 63 Fuel Injection unit.
Bad news is, I need the block to support it and hoping to get it set up and stamped to be "authentic".
Any thoughts on where to start looking?

Curt. I can't see where in CA you are, but I strongly suggest you join a local NCRS Chapter. Yea, eBay and Craigslist sometimes come up with blocks. The really good items are usually not advertised as they are word of mouth by NCRS members. The knowledge here will point you in the right direction and probably save you lots of $$$.

          Curt,

There are a few good fuel injection restorers. Ken Hansen did my 63 and it came out nice. John DeGregory and Jerry Bramlett are two others.

              Curt

              Welcome to NCRS.

As noted above, good idea to join a local Chapter. California has three Chapters - Northern, Central, and Southern - contact information can be found at the drop-down menu above under "CONTACTS".

A couple of useful links below. You can download sample judging sheets for your car using the first link. In particular, for your engine question you want the "Mechanical" sheet. Your engine cylinder case is judged under #2.

Second link is to the judging standard for ENGINE-BLOCK. Scroll down to Section 4, Standard Deduction Guideline #1.

There are 4500 points total in Flight Judging - 350 points are assigned to your engine block. As Harry Sadlock noted above, and specified in the second link below, various elements are assigned point deductions. An engine with an incorrect casting number would receive a 350 point deduction. Correct casting number with too early/too late casting date would receive a 175 point deduction, etc.

Note that if the cylinder case you find is correct EXECPT FOR THE VIN STAMPING, that deduction is 25 points. Re-stamping blocks is often detectible and likely to also damage engine pad machining marks - resulting in further deductions. Sometimes it is best to leave well enough alone.

Hi Curt, Since you live in CA then contact Joe Marquez at 805-929-3910. He has many 1000's of engines. I think he has a block that is correct for your car. Look in the Driveline also. Engines Limited in Wisc. Randy
Classic Engines also in Wisc. Tom
All three men have ton's of engines and or just blocks. Mention my name. John D

                  Hello Curt,

I am restoring the same project as you are, my Fuelie was built December 4th 1962. I have been doing a good bit of research and have found a couple guys that have the correct equipment to do the broaching and stamping. Randy at Engines Limited in Omro Wisconsin has a machine that can do this properly, you can find him online. John DeGregory in PA is a wealth of knowledge and is a Fuel Injection guru with hundreds of restorations of FI units and tons of parts. Definitely reach out to these two guys, I think they can help.

                    John D...
There was a sizeable stash of blocks on the market about a year ago out in the general LA area, was it Joe that got them?
