Neither my wife or I have burned a leg on factory side pipes in the 32 years that we have owned side pipe cars. I have burned my leg on my first 65 which had hooker side pipes. But after a couple of singes you learn how to step out of the car. Just like stepping on a curb.

Installed with the correct insulation, factory side exhaust covers are barely warm to the touch after extended driving. I've owned several (including my current) with factory side exhaust and have never had a burn concern.
Now, my '69 427 with Hooker side pipes...completely different story. You could grill burgers on those bad boys.
